Do electronic contacts require lubricant?

  Electronic contacts (such as connectors, switches, battery terminals, gold fingers, audio jacks, etc.) do not always require the use of lubricants, but in many cases, the proper use of specialized lubricants or protectants can bring significant benefits, especially in preventing oxidation, corrosion and wear, thereby extending service life and maintaining good conductivity.

● Lubrication requirements

  1) The ideal contact lubrication is semi-conductive. Excessive conductivity can cause leakage between adjacent circuits, therefore it is unsuitable.
  2) The lubricant must be able to maintain high electrical insulation over a long period of time.
  3) In the past, mineral oil was generally used because it dries out easily, scorches easily, and oxidizes easily, so it is not suitable for use in contacts of strong electric arcs.
  4) One of the important considerations when selecting a lubricant is its properties at extreme temperatures. It should not solidify at extremely low temperatures and must have very low weight loss at extremely high temperatures.
  5) For example, in automotive switches, the lubricating oil must be effective within the range of -40℃ to +125℃.
  6) The ignition point must be quite high to ensure that it is not easy to ignite when the temperature rises sharply or an electric arc passes through.
  7) With the increasing use of plastics in electronic components, lubricants must have the property of not corroding plastics.
  8) The volatility at extremely high temperatures must be very low.

  ● Uneven Surface: A seemingly smooth surface appears uneven under a microscope. These unevennesses not only reduce the actual effective contact area, thus reducing the effective current flow, but also contribute to wear and burn-off.

  ● Hazards of electric arcs: High heat causes pollutants in the air to undergo chemical reactions at the junctions, producing a surface film that increases electrical resistance, corrodes metals, etc.

  ● Oxidation of contacts: Oxidation on the contact surface forms an oxide film, which weakens the contact performance.

  ● Flammability: It is easily ignited and carbonized when the temperature rises sharply or when an electric arc passes through it.

  ● Silicon contamination: Low-molecular-weight silicon can produce insulators and crystalline silicon carbide. These can cause circuit interference and malfunctions. This is known as silicon contamination. Therefore, silicon-based lubricants should not be used as contact lubricants.

Excessive grease may attract dust or cause slight interference with high-frequency signals.

  ● Using the wrong product : regular WD-40 (containing lubricant) or petroleum-based petroleum jelly may leave residual oil film, attract dirt, or damage plastic/rubber parts. Absolutely avoid using it on PCB boards or precision contacts requiring high conductivity.

  ● Applying too much: If too much is applied to the middle of the contact surface, it may hinder electrical conductivity (especially in cases of low contact pressure).
