  Harmonic Drive reducers are renowned for their high reduction ratio, zero backlash, and extremely high transmission accuracy, making them a critical core component in six-axis industrial robot joint modules, servo positioning platforms, and aerospace control systems.

  Their transmission principle relies on three main components: the wave generator, the flexspline, and the circular spline. The eccentric bearing of the wave generator causes the flexspline to undergo periodic elastic deformation, thereby achieving alternating tooth engagement and resulting in an extremely high reduction ratio and torque output.

  This design delivers astonishing precision and torque density, but it also presents stringent challenges in lubrication and thermal management.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Harmonic Drive Reducers

Advantages:

  ● High reduction ratio structure: A single stage can achieve a ratio of 1:50 to 1:160, making it more compact than traditional planetary gear reducers.

  ● Small size and light weight: Ideal for applications with limited space, such as robot end effectors or joints.

  ● High positioning accuracy and low backlash: Multiple teeth engage simultaneously, resulting in a repeatable positioning accuracy of less than 1 arcmin.

Disadvantages:

  ● The flexible spline is a thin-walled component with limited fatigue life: it is prone to plastic deformation under long-term high-frequency loading.

  ● Weak impact resistance: instantaneous reversal under high load can lead to tooth surface indentations and root cracks.

  ● Poor heat dissipation: the enclosed structure makes it difficult for grease to effectively conduct heat.

  ● Extremely high lubrication requirements: highly sensitive to oil film thickness, adhesion, and material compatibility.

1. Abrasive Wear Effect

  When the flexible gear and rigid gear are in contact, the tooth surfaces are subjected to periodic contact stress and sliding friction. The wave generator bearing also undergoes continuous rolling deformation, easily generating metal particles (iron powder, oxides).

  If the lubricant's cleanliness is insufficient, these abrasive particles will repeatedly embed in the contact surfaces, leading to three-body abrasion and accelerating tooth surface fatigue spalling.

2. Oil Film Breakdown at High Temperatures

  During continuous high-power operation, internal friction generates heat, causing the lubricant viscosity to decrease and flow away from the tooth root area, resulting in a boundary lubrication state. This can lead to direct metal contact and surface adhesive wear.

3. Increased Viscosity at Low Temperatures

  In environments below 0°C, the fluidity of the lubricant decreases significantly, leading to increased starting resistance and delayed servo response. In severe cases, it can even prevent the wave generator from starting.

4. Insufficient Extreme Pressure and Shear Stability(EP & Shear Stability)
